Our Active Ingredients

Biotechnology for Innovation

As a global leader, Lallemand excels in developing, producing, and marketing natural ingredients derived from live microorganisms, including bacteria and yeasts. With over a century of expertise in yeast and more than 40 years in bacteria, we have recently expanded our portfolio through the acquisition of Swiss biotech company Evolva. This acquisition enhances our capabilities in precision fermentation and sustainable innovation.

Microorganisms represent a new frontier in personal care innovation, especially in the evolving field of skin microbiota. We leverage over a century of expertise in microorganisms to navigate this rapidly expanding field for our customers.

Advanced Active Ingredients for Microbiota health

Crucial to skin health, the skin microbiota comprises a dynamic community of trillions of bacteria, yeasts, fungi, viruses, and other microorganisms residing within the epidermis, dermis, and skin-associated glands and follicles. The diversity and dynamics of this community vary based on factors such as age, gender, and ethnicity, and are also influenced by environmental interactions. As the skin interfaces with the external environment, the balance of these populations is in constant flux.

To effectively maintain or restore the health of our skinā€™s microbiota, prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics play an essential role:

  • Prebiotics
    • Promote the growth of good bacteria to restore balance to the skin microbiome.
    • According to the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics [ISAPP, Gibson, 2017], a prebiotic is a substrate that is selectively utilized by host microorganisms conferring a health benefit.
  • Probiotics
    • Living microorganisms which, in addition to the traditional nutritional benefits, also have health benefits if used in sufficient amounts.
    • Probiotics are a popular way to restore the gut microbiome, and they are garnering increasing interest for the skin microbiome as well. Lallemand Personal care probiotics:
    • Currently, probiotics are not commonly used in topical skin care products due to challenges in maintaining the viability of live microorganisms in formulations, ensuring their stability and efficacy when applied to the skin, and the lack of comprehensive regulatory guidelines for their use in cosmetics.
  • Postbiotics
    • Metabolites that are the byproducts of bacterial or yeast lysis or non-viable microorganisms produced by living microorganisms (probiotics).
